Terms of Service — Filed

Ava Research LLC · Last updated: October 17, 2026

By using Filed (the "Service"), whether directly or through Meta's Muse, you agree to these terms.

What the Service does

Filed searches real, public federal court filings (via CourtListener's RECAP archive) and SEC litigation disclosures (via EDGAR) by company and matter type, and lays a filing's own stated facts side by side with what you say about your own situation. It's a search and comparison tool, not a legal service.

What the Service is not

  • Not legal advice, and not a determination of anything. Filed surfaces; the user decides. It never tells you whether you qualify, are eligible, or are part of any class action — that determination belongs to the listed firm or the court, never to Filed. Consult a licensed attorney before making any decision about a legal matter.

  • Not a guarantee of completeness. Coverage is not exhaustive — a silent miss is possible. A filing that exists in the real world may not appear in a Filed search, and the absence of a result is never evidence that no filing exists.

  • Not a settlement or payout service. Filed shows filings only — never a settlement amount, a payout, a claim deadline, or how to file a claim.

  • Not a law firm referral or recommendation service. Counsel of record shown on a docket is read straight off the public filing — Filed never recommends, ranks, or accepts payment to feature any firm.

Your responsibility

You are solely responsible for verifying any filing's current status before relying on it, and for consulting a licensed attorney before making any decision about a legal matter. Filed is not a substitute for professional legal advice.

Acceptable use

You agree not to:

  • Use the Service for any unlawful purpose.

  • Attempt to interfere with, disrupt, or reverse-engineer the Service.

  • Use automated means to extract data from the Service beyond normal use through Muse.

  • Present Filed's output as a legal determination, a verified eligibility finding, or advice of any kind to a third party.

Fees

The Service is free. If we introduce a paid tier in the future, we'll clearly disclose pricing before you're charged, and any billing will happen through Ava Research LLC's own site, never through Meta.

Availability

We aim to keep the Service running reliably but don't guarantee uninterrupted availability. The Service runs on scale-to-zero infrastructure, so the first call after a period of inactivity may take longer to respond. Live search results also depend on CourtListener's own availability and published rate limit — when unavailable or rate-limited, Filed falls back to a short-lived cache or says plainly the source is unavailable; it never fabricates a result. We may perform maintenance, and rarely, the Service may be unavailable without advance notice.

Termination

You may stop using the Service at any time by disconnecting it from Muse. We may suspend or terminate access for violation of these terms, misuse, or abuse of the Service.

Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent permitted by law, Ava Research LLC is not liable for any indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of the Service, including damages related to a legal decision made in reliance on Filed's output or an incomplete search result. The Service is provided "as is" without warranties of any kind.

Changes to these terms

We may update these terms from time to time. Continued use of the Service after an update means you accept the revised terms.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of the State of North Carolina, without regard to conflict-of-law principles.
